iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3 – Samsung more popular in the UK

The Galaxy S3, Samsung’s flagship mobile device, was the most popular smartphone in the UK in September – despite the iPhone 5 being released.

The iPhone 5 was released to much fanfare on 21 September, selling more than five million handsets worldwide in its first three days.

Yet it seems that in the UK we are a nation of fandroids as the iPhone 5 failed to topple the Galaxy S3 from its position as the nation’s favourite smartphone.

Apple iPhone 5 fifth most popular

The iPhone 5 may have been released towards the end of the month, but many had expected it to swoop straight in as the nation’s favourite.

Yet it could only manage fifth place in the table, behind the iPhone 4S in second place and, to rub salt into the wounds, behind two other Samsung handsets.

In a surprise twist, the Samsung Galaxy Ace and Galaxy S2 both somehow charted higher than the new iPhone.

Apple iPhone 5 expected to climb

It may be a fairly disappointing result for Apple and the new iPhone, but experts predict that it’s only a matter of time until the smartphone climbs to the top of the pile.

Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at uSwitch, which carried out the research said:

“Everyone expected the iPhone 5 to knock the Samsung Galaxy S3 off the top spot as the nation’s favourite phone, but that hasn’t happened, yet,”

“After six generations of Apple phones, the excitement around the iPhone 5 has failed to convert into immediate sales, but cynics should take note, this is the thinnest, lightest, fastest and best-looking iPhone ever.”

“In weeks to come we’ll likely see Apple sneak up the ranks but for now at least Samsung can continue to enjoy its impressive run of five months at the top of the tree.”
